I will send my son, whom I love.

(Luke Chapter 20:13)

It was night

The crack of a whip, rang out in the night…
…thirty-seven, thirty-eight, thirty-nine.
“His flesh ripped open, the ligaments torn,
“the soldiers spat and swore in scorn,
“then rammed on his head a crown of thorn…
…that really, should have been mine.

The next day

They hauled him out, throwing onto his wounds…
…big logs of heavy pine.
Blood and sweat rained onto the dirt,
they booed and jeered but he said not a word,
he took the pain and he took the hurt…
…that really, should have been mine.

That afternoon

As nails tore through his hands, they cheered…
…and mocked, looking for a sign.
“Father forgive. They don’t know,” he cried,
a spear was used to plunge into his side,
then breathing his last, he collapsed and died…
…a death that should’ve been mine.

The third day

Then on the third day, he came back to life…
…just as he said it would be.
They touched the scars in his hand and side,
he’d said before, “I’m the resurrection and life,
and whoever believes in me, will not die…”
…. his free gift to you and to me.

Based on several separate accounts by the
followers of Jesus and reported in the Bible.
