Music ministry

St Andrew’s South Brisbane has a long tradition of employing choir masters, music directors and organists to lead the music ministry of the parish. Since 1883, a total of 15 persons in turn have been employed in these roles. There has been a choir at St Andrew’s for most (if not all) of our 142 years. You can read more about the history of the choir in Margaret Powell’s blog article St Andrew’s Choir – A Proud History.

In 2023, Ms Sophie Jung is the organist for the 8:30 am service and Dr David Ash is Director of Music for the 10:30 am Sunday service. A number of musicians share the responsibility for leading the music at the 6:30 pm Sunday service.

The 10:30 am Director of Music chooses the music for the 10:30 am Sunday service and leads four teams of musicians and singers who provide the music for the service on a roster basis. In all, about 16 persons are involved. All teams meet to practise for at least one hour before the Sunday service. Some teams have an additional practice time during the week.

St Andrew’s Choir

St Andrew’s Choir consists of a community of faithful parishioners who are passionate about music and have a desire to glorify God through worship. Many of our members have sung in the choir since they joined St Andrew’s Anglican Church South Brisbane. We sing a variety of sacred music that ranges from the renaissance to more recently composed church music. Our goal is to be instruments of our Heavenly Father at each service in which we sing, leading the congregation in hymns and providing times of musical meditation at special services in the church calendar.

We usually meet monthly in the Church Hall to rehearse all the anthems that we will sing at the 8:30 am Sunday service for the month. Apart from musically challenging ourselves in the rehearsal and thus developing ourselves, we have also grown in fellowship with one another, praying for each other, looking out for one another and ultimately spurring one another on in our walk as faithful believers of Christ Jesus.

Our prayer is that we would continually strive towards our vision of Knowing Jesus and making Him known.
