This afternoon St Andrew’s South Brisbane hosted the first of three performances in this year’s concert series “Sonatas in South Brisbane”.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions, a large number of eager concert goers attended, masked and seated appropriately.
Venezuelan-born Frank Giraldo (oboe) and local artist Kathy Sander (piano) delighted patrons with their charming program. It featured Oboe Sonata in A minor TWV 41 a3 (Telemann), Three Romances for Oboe and Piano Op. 94 (Schumann), Sonata for Oboe and Piano (Poulenc) and Sonata for Oboe and Piano Op. 166 (Saint-Saëns). As an encore, the performers rewarded the appreciative audience with a sensitive rendition of Gabriel’s Oboe (Ennio Morricone), from the 1986 film “The Mission”.
The concert was produced by 4MBS Classic FM in association with St Andrew’s Anglican Church South Brisbane. Margaret Powell, a former Director of Music at St Andrew’s, instigated and organised the concert. Carol Adair, also of St Andrew’s, and one of 4MBS Classic FM’s regular presenters, compered today’s concert.

Patrons can now look forward to the next two concerts in the “Sonatas in South Brisbane” series, both scheduled for October (Sunday 10, Sunday 24).
