Sonatas in South Brisbane – Concert 2

This afternoon St Andrew’s South Brisbane hosted the second of three performances in this year’s concert series “Sonatas in South Brisbane”. Brisbane-born John Granger Fisher, one of Australia’s foremost concert pianists, dazzled the enthusiastic audience with his sparkling performance.

John chose works by Franz Liszt, Josef Suk, Robert Schumann and Frederic Chopin in a full and exhilarating program. From the first work, Liszt’s demanding Piano Sonata in B minor, through to the last work on the program, Chopin’s well-known Polonaise in A flat major Op. 53, the audience was left in no doubt about John Granger Fisher’s brilliance and mastery of the keyboard. One concert goer today described him as Brisbane’s own “Liszt-cum-Chopin”.

Still a young man, John Granger Fisher has already achieved much in his career. He has won Australian, British and American piano competitions and awards and performed at prestigious international venues, including Carnegie Hall. He has appeared as soloist with Australian, American and British orchestras and ensembles and toured with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. From about 2013 until his recent return to Australia, John was based in London and performed extensively throughout the United Kingdom.

Today’s concert was produced by 4MBS Classic FM in association with St Andrew’s Anglican Church South Brisbane. Margaret Powell, a former Director of Music at St Andrew’s, assisted by her daughter Anne Warren, organised the concert. Carol Adair, also of St Andrew’s and one of 4MBS Classic FM’s regular presenters, compered the concert.
