Mitchell Leigh (piano) and Rhoslyn Carney (flute)

This afternoon St Andrew’s Anglican Church South Brisbane hosted the third and final performance in this year’s concert series “Sonatas in South Brisbane”. The concert featured emerging flautist Rhoslyn Carney, Brisbane-based pianist and accompanist Mitchell Leigh, and The Farrenc Trio comprising Rhoslyn Carney (flute), Francesca Masel (cello) and Andre Van (piano).

In the first half of the concert, Rhoslyn and Mitchell combined beautifully to present two works from the Romantic period: Gabriel Fauré’s Fantaisie for Flute and Piano Op. 79 (1898) and Carl Reinecke’s Sonata for Flute and Piano Op. 167 (1882). Mitchell’s sparkling performance on piano together with Rhoslyn’s skilful and vibrant performance on flute produced music that soared to the rafters and filled the auditorium of the historic church building.

The second half of the concert began with Rhoslyn delighting the appreciative audience with a modern work by the late Australian composer Richard Meale (1932-2009): Mélisande for solo flute (1996). The concert concluded with The Farrenc Trio’s animated rendition of a work by their namesake French composer Louise Farrenc (1804-1875): Trio for Flute, Cello and Piano in E minor, Op. 45 (1862).

Today’s concert was produced by 4MBS Classic FM in association with St Andrew’s Anglican Church South Brisbane. Margaret Powell, a former Director of Music at St Andrew’s, organised the concert series, which culminated in today’s spirited concert. Carol Adair, also of St Andrew’s and one of 4MBS Classic FM’s regular presenters, compered each of the three concerts in the series.

Given the success of this year’s “Sonatas in South Brisbane” concerts, I do hope a similar series is offered again in 2022. Watch this space!
